About this tool
The CPM Calculator helps you work with cost per thousand impressions -- the standard pricing metric for display ads, social media ads, and programmatic campaigns. Enter any two of the three values (total spend, total impressions, or CPM) and it calculates the third.
It also converts between CPM, CPC, and CPA. If you know your CPM and click-through rate, it'll tell you your effective cost per click. If you know your conversion rate, it'll tell you your cost per acquisition. These conversions save you from switching between spreadsheets.
CPM varies wildly by platform. Facebook averages $5-15 CPM, LinkedIn runs $30-80, Google Display is $2-10, and programmatic can be under $1. Knowing your CPM helps you compare channels on an apples-to-apples basis and spot when a platform is overcharging you.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
CPM stands for Cost Per Mille (mille is Latin for thousand). It's the cost an advertiser pays for 1,000 ad impressions. If your CPM is $10, you pay $10 for every 1,000 times your ad is shown.
CPM = (Total ad spend / Total impressions) x 1,000. If you spent $500 and got 100,000 impressions, your CPM is $5.00.
It depends on the platform and audience. Facebook: $5-15 is typical, under $5 is good. LinkedIn: $30-80 is normal for B2B. Google Display: $2-10. Programmatic: $1-5. A 'good' CPM is one where the resulting CPA is profitable for your business.
CPM is better for brand awareness campaigns where you want maximum reach. CPC is better for performance campaigns where you want clicks and conversions. If your goal is sign-ups or purchases, optimize for CPC or CPA. If your goal is getting your name out, optimize for CPM.
